Storing Treasures in Heaven

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also". --Matthew 6:19-21

Scripture is very clear that while earthly structures, possessions, and accomplishments may pass away, there are specific things formed within a person that are eternal. These are what Scripture calls treasure in heaven, inner formation, and spiritual substance.

These eternal formations are not abstract—they are precisely defined throughout the Bible.

I will list them clearly, with Scripture, and explain what each one is.

FIRST: THE SOUL ITSELF IS ETERNAL

This is the most foundational truth.

Jesus said:

“What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”
— Matthew 16:26

This establishes the hierarchy:

The soul is more valuable than everything external.

The soul continues beyond physical death.

Jesus also said:

“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.”
— Matthew 10:28

The body dies.

The soul continues.

The soul is eternal formation.

SECOND: CHARACTER FORMED IN RIGHTEOUSNESS IS ETERNAL

Scripture repeatedly emphasizes righteousness as eternal.

“The righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.”
— Matthew 13:43

Righteousness is not behavior alone.

It is internal formation of alignment with God.

Proverbs says:

“Righteousness delivers from death.”
— Proverbs 11:4

This formation carries beyond this life.

THIRD: FAITH IS ETERNAL FORMATION

Faith itself becomes permanent internal structure.

Hebrews says:

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
— Hebrews 11:1

And later:

“These all died in faith…”
— Hebrews 11:13

Faith becomes part of the eternal identity of the person.

It does not disappear at death.

It is carried forward.

FOURTH: LOVE IS ETERNAL FORMATION

This is one of the clearest statements in Scripture.

Paul writes:

“And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
— 1 Corinthians 13:13

Notice the word remain.

Love continues eternally.

Love formed within a person does not disappear.

It is eternal substance.

FIFTH: OBEDIENCE TO GOD BECOMES ETERNAL FORMATION

Jesus said:

“Whoever does the will of God lives forever.”
— 1 John 2:17

Obedience forms eternal alignment.

Not temporary compliance.

Permanent formation.

SIXTH: KNOWLEDGE OF GOD IS ETERNAL FORMATION

Jesus defined eternal life this way:

“Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God.”
— John 17:3

Eternal life is not just duration.

It is relationship and knowing God.

That knowing becomes permanent formation.

SEVENTH: TREASURES STORED IN HEAVEN ARE ETERNAL FORMATION

Jesus said:

“Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… where moths and vermin do not destroy.”
— Matthew 6:20

These treasures are not material objects.

They are eternal results of spiritual formation and faithful stewardship.

These cannot be destroyed.

EIGHTH: THE INNER PERSON IS ETERNAL

Paul explains this distinction clearly:

“Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
— 2 Corinthians 4:16

The outward body declines.

The inward person strengthens.

The inward formation continues eternally.

NINTH: SPIRITUAL FRUIT IS ETERNAL FORMATION

Jesus said:

“I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.”
— John 15:16

Fruit that lasts means fruit that continues beyond earthly life. This includes:

  • love

  • patience

  • faithfulness

  • obedience

These become permanent formation.

TENTH: YOUR WORK THAT IS BUILT IN ALIGNMENT WITH GOD BECOMES ETERNAL

Paul explains this very precisely:

“If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward.”
— 1 Corinthians 3:14

Some works survive.

Some do not.

What survives becomes eternal formation and reward.

Not the structure—but what was formed through it.

ELEVENTH: YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST IS ETERNAL FORMATION

Scripture says:

“When Christ appears, you also will appear with Him in glory.”
— Colossians 3:4

Your identity formed in Christ continues eternally.

Not your earthly roles.

But your spiritual identity.

TWELFTH: TRANSFORMATION INTO CHRIST’S LIKENESS IS ETERNAL

Paul writes:

“We are being transformed into His image.”
— 2 Corinthians 3:18

This transformation does not reverse.

It continues eternally.
